For us, “ecological responsibility” is not just a word!
“If the bee disappears from the earth, then man has only four years to live,” Albert Einstein once said. More and more factors are threatening bees. It is time to act, whether it is four years for humans to live or more remains to be seen.
The fact is, however, that bees are under massive threat. The reasons for this include the use of pesticides in agriculture, monotonous landscapes, a lack of food sources, the loss of the animals’ natural habitat and parasites such as the Varroa mite.
Without bees, not only would there be no honey, but fruit and vegetables would also become luxury goods – the animals pollinate around 80 per cent of our crops and wild plants. If bee populations cannot be maintained and the insects die out, researchers believe this would have fatal consequences for humans.
Our Managing Director, Felix Weigand, has enjoyed beekeeping since he was a teenager. This gave rise to the idea of keeping his own bee colonies. This idea became a reality: with the help of a bee sponsor from the local beekeeping association, we have taken in two bee colonies on our office premises and manage them organically and sustainably.
In our view, this is a great way to make a meaningful contribution to environmental protection. The effort involved is relatively low and the benefits for the environment are very high. And on top of that, we and our customers are spoilt with the finest honey.
